Shaman - Horse

Poem - Shadows on the Cave Wall

This poem was inspired by my listening to a series of CDs on philosophy.  One of the beginning philosophical concepts was Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.    Here is my take on Plato’s thoughts.

Shadows on the Cave Wall

Black castings of reality
spring from my fire.
Solid impressions of forms
extend from the sun.

Some shadows move
at my command.
Others have an outer life
foreign to my own.

What do I contribute
to this tableau?
My shadow merges
with the sum of shadings.

Are they spirits,
these shadows of reality?
Concrete whispers
echoed in my heart.

Sinister revenants,
unwelcome miasma,
dare I welcome you
to my cave wall?

So I feed the fire
so it may cast
continued shadows
on the cave wall.
