Poem - Masque

A masque is defined as “a form of amateur dramatic entertainment, popular among the nobility in 16th- and 17th-century England, which consisted of dancing and acting performed by masked players”. Masque of the Red Death was a tale about death visiting a fateful masquerade ball. My poem “Masque” is about the festivities of life, and the backdrop therein.

Masque
Poem for Day 119 – 20150429

Put on the masque,
regale the throngs
with music, dancing
acting, and song.
Wear the mask,
the face of like,
on this stage
of ill concealed.
Contracts suborned
by sickness inner,
have strength
to portray
the smiling outer.
Make merry,
hide terror,
to fair patrons,
consorts all
in a play
most bitter.
The masque goes
on,
life dies
within,
hope worn
outside
as soul
expires within.
