Poem - Too Much Alive

The poem “Too Much Alive” was inspired by a snippet of stanza. I was listening to Placebo radio on Slacker. There I heard Gene Libertine’s "Is It Over"? The lines “Half buried in a world / Where I love everyone / And everyone loves me” triggered the start of my lyrical effort. I can only admit that the decidingly dark tone of Placebo radio informed the rest.

Too Much Alive
Poem for Day 205 – 20150724

I was buried in a world
where I loved everyone
and nobody loved me.
Looking for the undamaged one,
untouched by the trials of life,
I'm not the one, could it be you?
I looked around to find hope
in eyes and hearts of fellow men
and only saw myself looking back.

Images pressed on my eyes,
what I should and cannot be,
lofty goals from hell itself.
Victory found in things,
possessions blending with
plastic people substitutes.
Complete with glass eyes and stone hearts,
bad copies of a perfect life,
marked with scars of feted trials.

Buried is what I seem to be,
six feet under and still alive,
living dead ready for the grave.
Buried underneath the thing called life
mounded high with my regret.
Buried and too much alive.

Touch me if you can please,
really reach me inside my wall,
if you can climb outside of yours.
Shadows passed in the night,
phantoms pretending complicity
with empty vacuum left behind.
Call a truce to put down the arms,
defenses erected for survival sake,
trying to live but living to die.

Maybe my definition of love is wrong,
as twisted as my soul seems to be,
separated from myself as I am to you.
I screamed to hear it echo back,
if everyone is always talking
why am I the only one speaking?
I'll find hope in the bitter end,
a destination for the likes of me,
with the grave pulled over top of me.

Buried is what I seem to be,
six feet under and still alive,
living dead ready for the grave.
Buried underneath the thing called life
mounded high with my regret.
Buried and still too much alive,
buried and too much alive,
too much alive,
alive.
