“Don't let the world tell you who you are. Don't let others define your sense of self. You know who you are and who you want to be. Do not let their voices become your inner monologue. There is power in a strong sense of self. You feel lost when you follow the path others have set for you instead of your own.”
These inspired me to write the poem “Who I Am”.
Who I Am
I'll tell you who I am
the good and bad of it
the ugly and sad of it
the beautiful kink of it
wrapped around the only one
who knows how I'm realized
into the incarnate manifest
outside of the holy books
Miss Manners’ etiquette
best dressed fashion list
handy boxes of tags applied
to what I feel inside
to who I'll take to bed
to when I pray to gods
to where I find my peace
to why I speak my voice
if I stray I will break
lost in your considered ways
best intents leave their mark
on my soul and on my life
tortures meant to correct
will only stain the cloth
part of the quilt of life
of which you are unique
though you may hide the light
I'll shine mine for all to see
speak with voice of my own
from the only one
that can tell you who I am.
