“Strung From Trees” was inspired by the silent ribbons and ropes found in the Japanese forest of Aokigahara. I find the words to be a whisper of what I’d like to say, much like the ragged remnants of cord found under forest canopies.

Strung From Trees

Strung from trees of the mind
into hearts beyond the fringe
where the darkness is too thick
to see beyond the ring of self
there another will be found
holding space in the gloom
signpost of the journey's path
sharing light of their own
these will shine like the sun
echo of the bond they hold
entrusted with the hope to keep
against the press of misery

these I see from afar
as I walk throughout the world
there a cord has been found
dread fills my thoughts as I look round
what awaits at each end
a happy story or rueful stare?
there is one way to reveal
walk until the stop comes near
the malady may appear
if the link is held by one
an absence on the other side
silence inviting mournful notes

ask for joy, prepare for less
the cords promise nothing more
links between here and there
without assurance of comfort's hand
bodies absent tell half the tale
when they're removed to be interned
look to the tears that remain
or sad resignment in the face
strung from trees of the mind
a forest filled with many lines
this poem will add another one
connection asked for all to find.
